Hi everyone! My name is Rob and I am the VP for Veterinary Education within Medic Mentor. I took on this role in the Autumn of 2019 and have loved being part of such a dynamic and evolving group of doctors, dentists and vets. The sheer scale and growth of Medic Mentor is hard to comprehend for people not involved but meeting aspiring vets, doctors and dentists is something that I’m very glad has become part of my day-to-day work.
A bit more about how I got to where I am today. I was born and raised in Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland where I nurtured a passion for science and animals. I then applied to the only two vet schools in Scotland and started training at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2013. Throughout my time at vet school I quickly realised that teaching and mentoring was what I enjoyed most. Thankfully, there were a plethora of opportunities for senior students to help in mentoring and academic guidance of pre-clinical students. Carrying out this work then lead me to produce an evaluation of the teaching of communication skills within the clinical years of the degree. I was lucky enough to present my findings at the only veterinary education conference in Europe; VetED. I also attained Associate Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy whilst in my final year of vet school, which is a universally recognised accreditation in learning and teaching within the higher education setting.
Upon graduating in 2018, I moved down to Northumberland and started my first new graduate job as a mixed practice associate in a small, independent clinic just outside of Newcastle. I saw a wide variety of species; from cats, dogs, horses and even the odd tortoise. After 18 months I applied to work in the University of Liverpool’s first opinion small animal practice where their final year vet students perform clinical rotations. I then moved to Liverpool in March 2020 and took on a role as a Primary Care Lecturer. This involves not only lecturing clinical students but also working in clinic to mentor soon-to-be vets ready to graduate as fully qualified members of the profession.
This new role, alongside my current position within Medic Mentor is hopefully a great start to a life-long teaching career within the wonderful profession that is veterinary medicine. I hope you’ve made it to the end of this bio with a bit more clarity of who I am but if not, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or ideas via e-mail.
